The Snow Queen musical for children saw first night in Moscow

MOSCOW, November 18 (Itar-Tass) — The Snow Queen musical based on the famous fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen saw the first night at Moscow’s Variety Theatre on Saturday.

Gennady Khazanov, People’s Artist of Russia and artistic director of the Moscow Variety Theatre, said that it had been his dream to see the show on the theatre’s stage.

“I fell in love with theatre 60 years ago. I was happy to see an amateur performance titled ‘The Snow Queen’. This fairy tale by Andersen has been one of my favorite since then. For many years I dreamed of seeing a performance based on this beautiful story appear on the stage of Variety Theatre. At last my dream has come true,” Gennady Khazanov told a news conference at Itar-Tass.

Gelsyat Shaidunova wrote music for the musical and Zhanna Zherder wrote the libretto. More than 35 actors were involved in the musical which was played to a housed packed with children and their parents. The age of actors coincided with the real age of characters. The roles of Karl, Gerda and the Robber Girl were played by their peers who had passed numerous castings.

“It’s a wonderful musical. I want it to live long. I believe in it because I believe in Andersen, the production and the team that created it,” Khazanov said.
