UNITED NATIONS ORGANISATION, November 15 (Itar-Tass) — Russia hopes that the U.N. Security Council will be able to convince Israel and Palestine to stop violence as soon as possible, Russian permanent representative to the United Nations Organisation Vitaly Churkin said.
“I’d like to hope that the Security Council will give a signal to the warring parties – to Israel and Palestine – to stop violence as soon as possible,” Churkin said on Thursday.
The U.N. Security Council will discuss the situation in the Gaza Strip. According to well-informed sources, the closed-door session will involve Israeli permanent representative to the U.N. Ron Prosor and Palestinian observer Riyad Mansour.
In the letter to the U.N. chairman, Mansour called for reacting to the situation in the Gaza Strip and convince Israel to stop the military campaign against the Palestinian people. For his part, Prosor asked the U.N. Security Council to condemn missile strikes against Israeli citizens.
On Wednesday, November 14, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. During the conversation, the U.N. Secretary General said he is concerned over the deterioration of the situation in the south of Israel and in the Gaza Strip. He also expressed anxiety about Israel’s strikes on the Gaza Strip and the assassination of Hamas Senior Operative Ahmed Al-Jabri.
