MOSCOW, September 2 (Itar-Tass) —— There is no alternative to the Kofi Annan Plan and the Geneva Communique for the beginning of the peace dialog in Syria, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov microblogged in the Twitter on Sunday.
“UN Secretary General Special Envoy Brahimi rules out external military interference for settling the Syrian conflict. We agree: there is no alternative to the Kofi Annan Plan and the Geneva Communique if we want to start a peace dialog in Syria,” he said.
UN/LAS Special Envoy on Syria Lakhdar Brahimi said on Saturday that military interference in Syrian affairs would mean a failure of diplomatic efforts. He made the statement to the Al Arabia channel upon his accession to the position on Saturday.
Brahimi said the Syrian government played the key role in the initiation of the political process in the country and backed the appeal of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to all parties to the conflict for meeting their ceasefire commitments.
Brahimi indicated there was no imminent need for new resolutions of the UN Security Council. It is the most important now to stop the bloodshed and the Syrian government, which is aware of the national situation and sufferings of the people better than others, bears great responsibility, he said.
