SIMFEROPOL, the Crimea, August 22 (Itar-Tass) — Crimean Tatars on Wednesday thwarted an election rally organized by Ukrainian Communist Party leader Pyotr Simonenko. They hurled eggs and rotten fruit at the country’s main Communist. The Crimean Tatars demonstrated their negative attitude to Simonenko who, they believe, justifies the deportation of the Crimean Tatar population from the Crimea in 1944.
Up to 1,500 Communist Party supporters and dozens of Crimean Tatars gathered for a rally downtown Simferopol. Policemen from the Berkut riot police units are trying to prevent clashes.
