Kiev continues celebrations of 1,530th anniversary

President Viktor Yanukovich congratulated Kiev residents on the anniversary and wished them peace and prosperity

KIEV, May 27 (Itar-Tass) —— Celebrations of the 1,530th anniversary of Kiev continued on Sunday with sport events and a balloon festival. There will be a pop concert and fireworks at night.

President Viktor Yanukovich congratulated Kiev residents on the anniversary and wished them peace and prosperity. “Unique architecture, historical monuments, the city’s flavor and thousands-long history are national and international treasures, which amaze millions of people,” he said.

Kiev’s history starts in the 5th century. There is a legend that brothers Kiy, Shchek and Khorin and their sister Lebed chose a place on the bank of the Dnieper for building the city and naming it after the elder brother, Kiy. The city developed rapidly in the rule of Prince Vladimir the Great (980-1,015).
