TBILISI, May 13 (Itar-Tass) —— The flood in Tbilisi has claimed five lives, including two children’s, rescuers said on Sunday.
Pouring rains led to the Kura River’s spreading out of its banks. Dozens of homes and many vehicles were flooded in the Krtsanisi district. Rescuers and Interior Ministry Forces servicemen are cleaning the streets. Tbilisi has not had such a powerful flood since the early 1970s.
Rains and a sharp growth of the water level in rivers damaged bridges and motorways and cut power supply to the homes of tens of thousands of people in eastern Georgia.
The damage is the biggest in the Dusheti district, northwest of Tbilisi, and the Gurdzhani, Lagodekhi and Akhmeti districts, east of the capital city. Local authorities said that ten villages were isolated by floods in the Dusheti district. The damage was preliminary estimated at $5-6 million.
