SOFIA, April 11 (Itar-Tass) —— Bulgaria’s Cabinet of Ministers has approved of a plan for building a seventh reactor at the Kozloduy nuclear power plant, which had originally been designed for the Belene NPP.
“The Ministry of Finance has secured the adoption of a decision another reactor at Kozloduy should be built on the market economy principles, because the government will provide no guarantees or use budget money,” Deputy Prime Minister, Finance Minster Simeon Dyankov said, adding that the government was hoping for an active role of private investors.
Also, the Cabinet of Ministers made a decision to adopt urgent measures for an IAEA inspection of the 5th and 6th reactors of the Kozloduy NPP. The IAEA will look into the reactors’ safety on November 26 through December 13, 2012.
The Kozloduy NPP was commissioned in 1974. In 1991 through 2002 the power plant had six operational reactors, which provided up to 50 percent of the electricity the country needed. In 2003-2006 four reactors were shut down when Bulgaria joined the European Union. The 5th and 6th reactors have undergone upgrade and been certified by the EU. The certificate for one of them will expire in November 2017, and for the other, in October 2019.
