Ponomarenko died of a gunshot wound to the head

MOSCOW, April 4 (Itar-Tass) — An unidentified attacker shot and killed former mayor Shakhty Sergei Ponomarenko in western Moscow on Wednesday morning, a city police official told Itar-Tass.

The ex-mayor was shot to death in his car at a petrol station.

The report about the crime came in at 09:45, Moscow time from an operator of the petrol station located in Mozhaiskoye Shosse /Highway/, 43. The woman heard the shots and when she came out she found a dead man in an Audi.

"The victim has been identified. He is the former mayor of Shakhty Sergei Ponomarenko," the police official said.

Ponomarenko died of a gunshot wound to the head. Eyewitnesses said a man in a black anorak, about 160-165 cm in height had fled the scene.
