Iran, RF may play constructive role in regional conflicts' settlement

Commenting on the situation Salehi said that the latest regional events have accelerated the decline of the influence of the US in the region

TEHRAN, March 13 (Itar-Tass) —— Iran and Russia may play a constructive role in the settlement of regional problems, including the settlement of the crisis in Syria and the Middle East problem, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ali-Akbar Salehi said on Tuesday during a meeting with Assistant to Security Council Secretary of Russia Evgeny Lukyanov, who is on a visit to Tehran.

“Iran and Russia may support improvement of security in Syria and implementation of political and economic reforms in that country,” Salehi said. He criticized the “wrong approach of some Western countries” to the perception of events in Syria. This approach, he said, may destabilize the situation and provoke an outburst of terrorism and extremism in the region.

Commenting on the situation in the Arab world, Salehi said that the latest regional events marking “Islamic Awakening of the peoples” have accelerated the decline of the influence of the US in the region. During the meeting, Salehi appreciated highly Russia’s presidential election on March 4 and congratulated the Russian people with its successful organization; and called for further development of relations between Tehran and Moscow in various fields.

The position of official Tehran on Syria is non-admission of interference from the outside into the affairs of that country. Iran’s officials stressed repeatedly that Syrian authorities are themselves able to settle the crisis, which continues in that country.
