Russia – world leader in nuclear power plant construction

Russia and the Russian state-run nuclear power corporation Rosatom are the current world leaders for the construction of new nuclear power plants

HANOI, February 8 (Itar-Tass) — Russia and the Russian state-run nuclear power corporation Rosatom are the current world leaders for the construction of new nuclear power plants, adviser of the Rosatom general director Pyotr Shchedrovitsky, who is currently on a working visit in Vietnam, told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.

“In the previous year Rosatom commissioned two new nuclear power units – one in Iran and another one in Russia. Nine nuclear power units are under construction simultaneously in Russia, another 12 nuclear power units were agreed to be funded and for construction to be arranged outside of Russia,” he said. Thus, the expert noted that it is the Russian state-run nuclear power corporation that is building simultaneously more than a third of all nuclear power units, which are under construction in the world. Two nuclear power units will be built at the Ninh Thuan-1 nuclear power plant in central Vietnam.

Construction of the first Vietnamese nuclear power plant in the Ninh Thuan province with the participation of Rosatom is expected to launch in 2014, this nuclear power plant is expected to be commissioned by 2020. According to the local experts, the main factor, which influenced Russia being selected as a partner for the creation and operation of the first Vietnamese nuclear power plant, became a high level of security of Russian nuclear power plants. Meanwhile, Russia guarantees Vietnam that the construction project of the first Vietnamese nuclear power plant that Rosatom is implementing meets the most advanced technological standards and all security requirements.
