MOSCOW, January 30 (Itar-Tass) — The Mytishchi court in the Moscow region convicted Sergei Marchenko, a yacht captain responsible for death of a young woman who got killed under the yacht propellers in the Pirogovsky water reserve in 2010. Marchenko was sentenced to a prison term of 4.5 years, which he will serve in a penalty colony on charges of violating river navigation rules that entailed human death.
The court ruled that Marchenko is to pay one million roubles in moral damages claimed by the victim’s relatives and 166,000 roubles in material damages.
When passing the verdict the court took into consideration the fact that the defendant fully confessed to the crime and deeply repented it. The prosecutor asked a 4.5- year prison term for the defendant in an ordinary prison.
Sergei Marchenko, who had been in hiding from prosecution and was on the federal wanted list, was detained in the middle of January.
The woman was killed in the Pirogovsky water reserve on July 19, 2010. The incident aroused strong public uproar. The investigation established that "the yacht captain violated water transport navigation rules as a result of which the yacht ran over a woman who died of injuries."
