VLADIVOSTOK, January 20 (Itar-Tass) — The transport refrigerator Irina, which has been in distress in the Pacific, is unable to get to the pier of Sakhalin's port Korsakov owing to deep draught. On Friday mornng the refrigerator was towed to the harbour by the rescue tugboat Atlas and remains at the roadstead there.
The Harbour Master service announced that rescuers continue to inspect the Irina and plan to diminish the vessel's draught by pumping out the water that still remains inside the ship ever since the vessel was holed on January 4. The rescue boats then brought the Irina back to Kunashir where Atlas scuba divers sealed the holes of the stricken refrigerator ship. However, the Kuriles and Sakhalin lack possibiities for repairing the Irina.
Meanwhile, the owner of the ship, the Vladivostok-based Brig-Star Shipping Company, announced a tender among the ship-repairing enterprises of Russia, China, and the Republic of Korea for the best conditions for repairs. The ship will be towed to a winning bidder after discharge operations at Korsakov.
