MOSCOW, November 2 (Itar-Tass) — The Russia Orthodox Church believes that the moral atmosphere on the majority of Russian television channels does not meet the interests and the needs of the society, the press service of the Moscow Patriarchate Synodal information department told Itar-Tass.

The moral atmosphere is inadmissible on television channels, the press service said.

Religious figures, scientists, pedagogues and some journalists believe that it is necessary to overcome the negative moral climate on television, including “the predominance of joke-cracking and dirty tricks, silly laugh and wise mean things”, head of the Synodal Department for Mutual Relations between the Church and the Society, Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin said.

Speaking at a plenary session of the Public Chamber, Archpriest Chaplin said, “The people’s will is evident. But several thousands of rich, influential and imperious persons oppose the people’s will. The power and the media elite must finally make a choice between the people’s life and the will of the mentioned group of persons,” the archpriest said.

Chairman of the Synodal press centre Vladimir Legoida said, “There are free mass media that defend the freedom of the speech and public values. But one cannot debate the identity between these several mass media and the public media system.”

He said the earlier models of public supervision over mass media turned out to be ineffective. He urged the Public Chamber’s commission for communications, information policy and the freedom of the speech to work out such model.
