MOSCOW, October 30 (Itar-Tass) —— Russia is concerned about a new outbreak of Palestinian-Israeli tensions, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Sunday in comment on the Gaza situation.
Tensions escalated in Gaza on October 29-30, and the Islamic Jihad exchanged strikes with Israeli servicemen. About 40 missiles and mortar projectiles were fired at the Israeli territory over the day, killing one and injuring no less than five. The Israeli air raid of Gaza killed nine Palestinians, among them Islamic Jihad field commanders, and injured 15.
The ceasefire agreement was reached in the small hours of October 30 with the mediation of Egypt, but the media reported its violations.
“Moscow is deeply concerned about the events in Gaza and Southern Israel,” the ministry said. “The new outbreak of tensions undermines the energetic efforts of the Middle East Quartet, which posted a statement in New York on September 23 with a pledge to restart the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations. Innocent people get hurt,” the ministry said.
“We insistently urge all the parties to the confrontation to show self-control and to prevent violence, which plays into the hands of regional peace opponents. Hopefully, the ceasefire agreement reached with the mediation of Egypt will be observed strictly,” the ministry said.
