RF deeply worried over aggravation of situation around Gaza Strip

Several dozen missiles and mortar shells were fired at the Israeli territory over the past 24 hours

MOSCOW, October 30 (Itar-Tass) — The Russian Foreign Ministry regards with deep concern developments in Gaza and in southern Israel, says a report by the information and press department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, published on Sunday on the ministry’s site.

“The new spiral of confrontation undermines actively undertaken efforts [in line with the New York statement of the Four of September 23, 2011] of the Middle East Quartet of international mediators on resetting talks between Palestinians and Israelis.” The statement says that quite innocent people also suffer.

“We insistently call on all involved sides to display restraint and to exclude violence whose relapses are advantageous only for those who are not interested in establishing peace in the region. We hope that the agreement on the ceasefire, reached with Cairo’s mediation, will be strictly observed.

The situation around the Gaza Strip has sharply deteriorated. Gunmen of the Islamic Jihad and the Israeli military bandied blows. Several dozen missiles and mortar shells were fired at the Israeli territory over the past 24 hours. One man was killed, and at least five Israelis were wounded. As a result of air raids by the Israeli Air Force on the Gaza Strip, nine Palestinians, including field commanders of Islamic Jihad were killed; 15 people were wounded.

A ceasefire agreement was reached with Egypt’s mediation on Sunday night. However, gunmen continue rocketing Israeli territories.
