KIEV, October 10 (Itar-Tass) —— Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich has vowed there will be no problems with transit of Russian gas to Europe via Ukraine, the presidential press service said on Monday referring to Yanukovich’s interview with the Greek newspaper Ethnos tis Kyriakis he gave while on a two-day visit to Greece last week.
“We shall ensure the transit,” said Yanukovich. “We are ready for the coming winter, we have stored more than 20 billion cubic meters of gas in underground tanks. This is a resource that will make it possible for us to ensure that demands of European consumers will be fully met. We shall do it jointly with Russia, it is our shared liability.”
Kiev is currently seeking to revise its gas contracts with Russia signed in January 2009 by Ukrainian former prime minister Yulia Timoshenko.
