CARACAS, September 17 (Itar-Tass) —— The cholera epidemic in Haiti is on the wane. As is seen in statistics made public on Friday, the number of residents of the Caribbean islands taken down by cholera last August was a little more than 20,000 - exactly half of the previous month’s rate.
According to the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti, the number of islanders who died from cholera in August reached 298, while in August 376 people fell victim to the epidemic. Nevertheless, in some regions of the country, where in the first week of September there were strong tropical rains, the number of cases of cholera has increased as compared to that of August.
From last October, when Haiti saw the first outbreak of cholera, and to August this year, the disease killed 6,266 people. The total number of cases of cholera has reached almost 440 thousand. Donor countries have disbursed 107 million dollars since the beginning of this year to fight cholera in Haiti, which helped significantly reduce the scale of the epidemic, said the UN Stabilization Mission.
