TEHRAN, April 7. /TASS/. Iran strongly condemns the US strike on Syria’s al-Shayrat military airfield, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Bahram Ghasemi, said on Friday.
"We condemn any unilateral military action in Syria," he emphasized. "Such actions only exacerbate the situation in the republic, strengthen terrorist’s positions and aggravate the situation in the region.’
The US military fired 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at a military airfield in Syria’s Homs province overnight to Friday under instructions issued by President Donald Trump. The strike came in response to what Washington believes was the Syrian government’s use of chemical weapons in the Idlib province. The US senior officials say the alleged chemical attack was launched from this airfield.
Governor of the Homs province, Talal al-Barazi, earlier confirmed information about casualties in the US strike. According to the governor, the military base attacked by the US played an important role in the fight against the Islamic State (IS) terror group (outlawed in Russia), particularly, in the operation to liberate Palmyra. He noted that those wounded in the attack are being evacuated from the airbase.
