Seven deadliest terrorist attacks that struck Russia over the past seven years
MOSCOW, April 4. /TASS/. MOSCOW, April 4. /TASS/. A bomb exploded in a subway car as it was travelling between the Sennaya Ploshchad and Tekhnologichesky Institut metro stations in St. Petersburg at about 14:40 Moscow time on Monday, April 3.
To date, eleven people have been killed and at least 45 hospitalized with injuries, according to Russia’s National Anti-terrorist Committee.
The Russian Investigative Committee said the explosion was a terrorist attack, adding that it is considering other versions of the tragedy. We have listed the seven deadliest terrorist attacks that struck Russia over the past seven years.
- On March 29, 2010, twin blasts carried out by two female suicide bombers during the morning rush hour rocked the Moscow subway at the Lubyanka and Park Kultury stations, with a roughly 40 minute-interval between the attacks. The explosions took the lives of 41 people, leaving 88 others injured.
- On January 24, 2011, a 20-year-old suicide bomber set off a bomb equivalent to between two and five kilograms of TNT in the international arrival hall of Moscow's Domodedovo International Airport. The blast killed 35 people and injured 170 others.
- On August 28, 2012, a female suicide bomber blew herself up at the home of prominent Sufi leader Said Afandi in Dagestan's Chirkei, killing him and six others.
- On October 21, 2013, a bus in Russia’s Volgograd Region was blown up by a female suicide bomber. The attack was carried out by a female perpetrator, who detonated an explosive belt containing 2-3 kilograms of TNT inside a bus carrying approximately 50 people, killing eight civilians and injuring at least 40 others.
- On December 29, 2013, a suicide bombing took place at the railway station in the city of Volgograd. It killed 18 people and injured at least 40. The attack occurred close to metal detectors near the station’s entrance. The bomb contained the equivalent of 10 kilograms of TNT and was set off by a suicide bomber.
- On October 5, 2014, a 19-year-old man went to the town hall where an event was taking place to mark Grozny City Day celebrations. Police officers noticed him acting strangely and stopped him. The officers began to search him and the bomb which he had been carrying exploded. Five officers, along with the suicide bomber, were killed, while 12 others were wounded.
- On December 4, 2014, a group of armed militants, in three vehicles, killed three traffic policemen, after the cops had attempted to stop them at a checkpoint in the outskirts of Grozny. The militants then occupied a press building and an abandoned school, located in the center of the city. Security forces launched a counter-terrorism operation, and using armored vehicles, attempted to storm the buildings. A shootout ensued, which left 14 policemen, 11 militants and 1 civilian dead.
