US Attorney’s Office did not present objections to Supreme Court against Bout case review
Such a decision of the attorney’s office does not mean the US Supreme Court will take the case for review
NEW YORK, March 12. /TASS/. US attorneys waived the right to present their objections against the petition filed by Russian citizen Viktor Bout’s defense counsels to review the earlier issued verdict. Such information is contained in court materials seen by TASS on Saturday.
Such a decision of the attorney’s office does not mean the US Supreme Court will take the case for review. Bout’s defense counsels filed the petition in February. The essence of data in the petition is that the court of appeal and the district court in New York used wrong legal criteria for evaluation of presented facts regarding concealment of exculpatory evidence by the attorney’s office.
"Different conclusions can be made from that. Obviously the Supreme Court will see only our side of the case. The attorney’s office essentially will not present any arguments against accepting Viktor Bout’s case for review by the Supreme Court; only our arguments will be presented," Bout’s counsel Alexei Tarasov told TASS.
Viktor Bout was detained in 2008 in the capital of Thailand, Bangkok, on a warrant issued by a local court on a request from the United States. In 2012, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison in the United States for alleged illegal arms supplies.
