According to Sigmar Gabriel, Russia and Germany need to seek disarmament in Europe despite the likelihood of the resumption of the arms race

MOSCOW, March 9. /TASS/. Russia and Germany need to seek disarmament in Europe despite the likelihood of the resumption of the arms race, German Foreign Minister, Sigmar Gabriel, said on Thursday following talks with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov.

"There are concerns discussed by both sides," the minister said. "There are huge potentials of the armed forces - in Russia and in the Baltic countries, the (NATO - TASS) war potential in Poland, a significant increase in the US defense spending. There are fears that we have again approached a new arms race spiral."

"Germany and Russia know better than many others that such arms races do not meet the interests of people in our countries," Gabriel emphasized. "Despite all complex issues and disagreements, we need to seek disarmament in Europe. In spite of all problems, it continues to be a major goal in Europe." "This is one of the complex issues we have divergent opinions on, and our approaches are different too," the German top diplomat added.
