CAIRO/BEIRUT, December 7. /TASS/. The Syrian government forces have driven armed groups out of Aleppo’s historic city center, the Al Mayadeen TV reported on Tuesday night.
According to the Lebanese TV channel, dozens of armed militants were killed or surrendered after they were scattered by the Syrian armed forces. Others have retreated in small groups to outposts in the southern districts of Salah-ad-Din, Sukkari and Al-Kalasa.
The Syrian army has also regained control of the road leading to the city’s international airport.
The pro-government troops currently control 80% of the territory that was seized by militants during the 2012 invasion in Aleppo. The territory still under militant control has shrunk to about 10 square kilometers.
However, militants still continue to shell districts under control of the Syrian army. The latest shelling of the Furqan district left five civilians dead and more than 20 injured.
