Thailand’s crown prince formally becomes new king

The new king’s coronation will take place after his father’s cremation in 2017

BANGKOK, December 1. /TASS/. Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn has been formally proclaimed Thailand’s new king 50 days after the death of his father who ruled the country for 70 years, the state television reported on Thursday.

The 64-year old monarch accepted the Thai parliament’s invitation to take the throne and received the title "His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun." He will be also known as King Rama X, the tenth ruler in the Chakri dynasty founded in 1782.

His father King Bhumibol Adulyadej died in Bangkok’s hospital aged 88 on October 13. Thailand is observing a year-long mourning period after his death.

The new king’s coronation will take place after his father’s cremation in 2017.
