Jordan agrees to host next LAS summit instead of Yemen
The summit is due to be held in March
CAIRO, October 24. /TASS/.Jordan has officially agreed to host the next summit of the League of Arab States (LAS), Mahmoud Afifi, spokesman for the LAS Secretary General, said on Tuesday.
According to Afifi, Jordanian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Nasser Judeh has informed LAS Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit "about the agreement of the Hashemite Kingdom to host and chair the 28th meeting of the LAS Council at the highest level." Earlier, Aboul Gheit sent a request to Jordan to host the session after Yemen refused to organize the event due to the recent developments in the country.
Afifi said the summit is due to be held in March. "Necessary consultations on the concrete date will start soon," he noted.
The last LAS session was held at the end of July in Nouakchott, capital of Mauritania. The 27th LAS summit was initially planned to be held in Morocco in spring 2016 but official Rabat decided against it. Back in February, the Moroccan Foreign Ministry said that the authorities thought that "objective conditions were not created to ensure the success of the summit, as well as to make decisions appropriate for the state of affairs and aspirations of Arab peoples.".
