French premier says European Union is under threat of breakup
The main problems are terrorist threats, the migrant crisis, and tensions within the EU itself between the union’s old members and Eastern European countries
PARIS, October 19. /TASS/. The current crises can lead to the disintegration of the European Union, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said on Wednesday.
"Today we can say that the European Union is at a crossroads," he said speaking in the country’s National Assembly. "It can choose the wrong path and even completely cease to exist in the history of the continent."
He noted that this is the result of "the terrorist threat, the migrant crisis, and tensions within the EU itself between the union’s old members and Eastern European countries and also between the countries of the North and the South."
"It is necessary to give a powerful impetus to initiatives to resolve the crises," the French prime minister said, adding that much has been done.
"Today the Ukrainian crisis is a threat that exists on the eastern borders of the European Union. Nevertheless, despite of all the difficulties, the search for solutions to resolve it is underway. This is done thanks to joint initiatives by French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who, specifically, will hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko this evening," Valls said.
