UN General Assembly set to appoint Antonio Guterres as next UN secretary general

UNITED NATIONS, October 13. /TASS/. The UN General Assembly will on Thursday consider the issue of appointing former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres as the next Secretary General of the United Nations Organization.

The UN General Assembly will consider the resolution, in accordance with which the Portuguese politician, who served as UN High Commissioner for Refugees until 2015, will be appointed as the administrative head of the organization for the time period from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2021.

The resolution must receive votes of two thirds of UN member countries to be adopted. On Tuesday, UN General Assembly chairperson sent a letter to the diplomatic missions of UN member countries expressing hope that the resolution will be adopted by a consensus. He also said that an informal meeting with the participation of the new secretary general will be held on October 19, where all countries may voice their opinions.
