Colombia welcomes peace agreement with FARC — president
"What we sign today after long years of serious and difficult talks is more than just an agreement between the government and rebels," Juan Manueal Santos said
CARTAGENA, September 27. /TASS/. The Colombian authorities welcome the final peace agreement between the government and FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia), President Juan Manueal Santos said on Tuesday.
"What we sign today after long years of serious and difficult talks is more than just an agreement between the government and rebels," Santos said. "This is an address of the Colombian people to the whole world - we are tired of war," he added.
"Cartagena will now be remembered as a place where the most important agreement in the modern history of Colombia was signed," the president stressed.
"Today, in the light of reaching a peace agreement, I want to sincerely thank all heroes of the Armed Forces of our country that fought with dignity to protect the safety and security of Colombians," Santos went on.
"I also want to pay tribute to those who have been my enemies for many years but are now signing this peace treaty with the government," the president told FARC leaders. "I was their enemy before, but I admit that they participated in the talks with dignity and showed rationality and will in their work. Without that, it would have been impossible to come to this agreement," he concluded.
