Merkel hopes Russia, US will agree on truce in Syria's Aleppo
Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters after the G20 summit in China’s Hangzhou on Monday that the agreements with the United States on Syria may be reached within several days
BERLIN, September 7. /TASS/. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday she expects that Russia and the United States will agree on the modalities of ceasefire in Syria’s Aleppo.
"I can only hope that Russia and the US will reach progress on the issue of ceasefire that will put an end to the bombings and the sufferings of people in Aleppo," Merkel said during the debate on the federal budget at the Bundestag.
Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters after the G20 summit in China’s Hangzhou on Monday that the agreements with the United States on Syria may be reached within several days.
White House Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said the talks between Washington and Moscow will discuss maintaining ceasefire in Syria and countering extremists of the Islamic State and the Jabhat al-Nusra groups (banned in Russia).
He stressed that Washington considers that the precondition for the deal should be providing immediate access for humanitarian assistance in Syria, including in Aleppo. The US also continues insisting that the Syrian opposition should have its sphere of influence, Rhodes said.
