Turkey’s FM briefs Lavrov on progress in Euphrates Shield operation

The sides discussed the humanitarian assistance, the termination of hostilities and the start of a political process in Syria

ANKARA, August 31. /TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu have held a telephone conversation to discuss the Turkish military operation in Syria, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said.

"The Turkish minister briefed his Russian counterpart on the operation Euphrates Shield. In that connection he pointed out that the operations against Daesh (the group Islamic State outlawed in Russia) were continuing successfully and Syrian opposition groups achieved successes in the struggle with it," the Turkish Foreign Ministry said. Also, the parties exchanged opinion on topical issues related with Syria.

"In that context they touched upon the delivery of humanitarian assistance, the termination of hostilities and the start of a political process in Syria," the Foreign Ministry said. Also, they reviewed plans for mutual visits and agreed to hold a meeting within the tightest deadlines possible."

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that in the telephone conversation Lavrov and Cavusoglu discussed topical issues of Russian-Turkish relations and the situation in Syria.
