Slovakia's premier urges cooperation between Russian and EU
The PM says he is against attempts to drive a wedge between the people of Russia and Europe
BRATISLAVA, August 29. /TASS/. Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico urged on Monday cooperation between the European Union and Russia.
"Isolation (of Russia) is unacceptable," the prime minister said at a ceremony in memory of those killed in the WWII Slovak National Uprising in the city of Banska Bystrica in central Slovakia.
"I am categorically against attempts to drive a wedge between the people of Russia and Europe. I promise that I will never be bringing antipathy in the Slovak-Russian relations," the prime minister said.
He reminded the audience about the leading role of the then Soviet Union in defeating Hitler’s Germany. "The Red Army bore the brunt in fight against fascism," he said.
He condemned those European politicians who are matter-of-factly speaking about the possibility to use nuclear weapons. This approach is absolutely inadmissible, he said, marking the importance of strengthening peace instead of supporting an atmosphere of hatred and creating the image of an enemy.
Attending the ceremony to mark 72 years since the Slovak National Uprising was born, were top leadership of the republic, leaders of political parties and nongovernmental organizations, WWII veterans, local students and diplomats from the embassies of the anti-Hitler coalition countries.
