ASEAN appreciates relations with Russia — communique

The association welcomes the results of the ASEAN-Russia Summit held on 19-20 May 2016 in Sochi

HANOI, July 25. /TASS/. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) highly appreciates relations with Moscow and the results of the jubilee Russia-ASEAN summit held on May 19-20 in Sochi, says a communique issued on Monday following meeting of the association’s foreign ministers in Vientiane, Laos.

"We welcomed the successful convening of the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the ASEAN-Russia Dialogue Partnership held on 19-20 May 2016 in Sochi. We appreciated the achievements made over the past 20 years of ASEAN-Russia Dialogue Relations across a wide range of areas, which have strengthened and enhanced the relations," the document says.

The ASEAN foreign ministers also believe that the adoption of the Comprehensive Plan of Action to promote cooperation for 2016-2020 will "further deepen and widen political-security, economic, socio-cultural and development cooperation."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is expected to take part in the Russia-ASEAN ministerial meeting in Vientiane on Monday. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Russia is to reaffirm ASEAN’s central role in regional affairs, willingness to expand concerted effort on international venues and the commitment to join work to promote stability and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region.
