Kazakhstan may toughen penalties for terrorism and extremism
The draft law was submitted after gunmen attacked the building of the Regional Police Service and the National Security Committee’s department in Almaty
ASTANA, July 19. /TASS/. The draft law toughening penalties for extremism and terrorism has been submitted to the Kazakhstani government for consideration, head of the National Security Committee Vladimir Zhumakanov said on Tuesday.
"The special working group developed a draft law on introducing changes and amendments to several legislative acts on issues of fighting against extremism and terrorism," Zhumakanov said.
On Monday gunmen attacked the building of the Regional Police Service of Almaty’s Almalinsky district and of the National Security Committee’s (NSC) department in Almaty. The anti-terrorist center of Kazakhstan declared the critical ("red") level of terrorist threat in Almaty.
Five people, including three police officers, were killed. Eight people, including five police officers, were injured. Kazakhstani President Nursultan Nazarbayev said the incident was a terrorist attack.
