Italian senate speaks against automatic extension of anti-Russian sanctions
The senate deputy speaker says the government support the document urging to refuse automatic extension
ROME, June 27. /TASS/. Higher chamber of the Italian parliament spoke against automatic extension of the EU anti-Russian sanctions. The opposing Lega Nord party included this provision into its version of the resolution, which was supported by the majority on Monday.
The document, which contains recommendations to the government on key issues to be discussed at the EU summit due on June 28-29, says: "it is necessary to discuss the question of sanctions (against Russia) at European representations and to refuse automatic approach in considering their term extension."
This resolution, suggested by the senate’s Deputy Speaker Roberto Calderoli, was supported by the government. Earlier Prime Minister Matteo Renzi spoke against an automatic extension of the sanctions.
At the same time, the senate rejected another resolution initiated by Paolo Tozzato of the Lega Nord, which suggests lifting all the sanctions.
The country’s all opposing parties have spoken for soonest lifting of the sanctions.
