Only direct Kiev-Donbass dialogue can help achieve peace — Russian expert
The sonner Poroshenko embarks on the dialogue the better it will be for Ukraine, says a Russian political analyst
MOSCOW, June 7. /TASS/. Only direct dialogue between the Ukrainian authorities and the self-proclaimed republics in Donetsk and Lugansk can ensure lasting peace in the region, a Russian political analyst said on Tuesday.
"The fact that even Savchenko understands the necessity of direct dialogue between Kiev and Donbass is another evidence to the inadequacy of Poroshenko’s position who refuses to sit down at the negotiating table with Zakharchenko and Plotnitsky," Alexey Chesnakov, director of the Center for Current Policy, a thinktank.
"Obviously, only such direct dialogue between the conflicting parties is the shortest and most efficient way to real peace. And the sonner Poroshenko embarks on this dialogue the better it will be both for him and for Ukraine."
Earlier on Tuesday, former Ukrainian servicemen Nadezhda Savchenko, who had been convicted and pardoned in Russia, said that as a member of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada (parliament) she is ready to personally meet with the leaders of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Alexander Zakharchenko and Igor Plotnitsky, for direct talks in a bid to reduce or even completely ease tensions in Donbass.
