UNITED NATIONS, February 19. /TASS/. The situation at the Syrian-Turkish border only builds up tensions in the region and stresses the necessity of a swift settlement of the Syrian crisis, Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the United Nations secretary general, said on Friday.

Any conflict in this area can spin out of control, he said commenting on Ankara’s plans to deploy its troops in northern Syria and called on all parties to keep it in mind.

Dujarric underscored that United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and his special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, hope for de-escalation of hostilities and violence. He noted that thanks to coordinated international efforts the United Nations has managed to deliver certain humanitarian aid to the besieged localities in Syria.

The Financial Times said on Friday Turkey is planning to deploy its troops in Syria’s northern provinces whereas Saudi Arabia seeks to deploy troops in the south. The United States, according to the Financial Times, is trying to keep Ankara and Riyadh from military activities in Syria as NATO is worried over the perspective of deploying Turkish troops in a country where Russia is conducting a military operation.

The United Nations Security Council plans to discuss Turkey’s plans to deploy troops in northern Syria at its closed-door meeting at 23:00 Moscow time on Friday. The Russian foreign ministry said Moscow plans to initiate a draft resolution urging to stop any actions undermining Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and hampering the launch of the Syrian peace process.
