World Food Programme to extend emergency operation in eastern Ukraine

According to recent data from the United Nations, about five million people are in need of humanitarian aid in the troubled eastern Ukraine

UNITED NATIONS, January 25. /TASS/. The World Food Programme (WFP) announced on Monday that it would expand its emergency operation in eastern Ukraine to provide food to more than 260,000 people affected by the conflict until the end of June, Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN secretary general, told reporters on Monday.

According to recent data from the United Nations, about five million people are in need of humanitarian aid in the troubled eastern Ukraine. A total of 3.2 million of them get assistance from the UN and its partners.

The United Nations puts the death toll in the region at about 9,100 people since the start of the conflict, and says 20,700 people have been wounded. The number of internally displaced persons is put at 1.1 million.
