Swedish court to challenge decision to award Nobel Peace Prize to EU
Members of the Lay down your arms association have turned to the court: Mairead Maguire, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1976, David Swanson and Jan Oberg, both nominated for Peace Prize this year
OSLO, October 7. /TASS/. A Stockholm court is due to consider the decision made in 2012 to award the Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union, a Sweden public group, the Lay down your arms association, said in a statement on Wednesday.
Three members of the association have turned to the court: Mairead Maguire, a peace activist from Northern Ireland who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1976, US political activist David Swanson and scientist Jan Oberg, who led a Danish peace foundation for many years.
Both Swanson and Oberg were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize this year.
They demand to acknowledge that the payment of the money prize from the Nobel Foundation was illegal as this was against the last will of the great Swedish scientist, who wrote that the prize should go to the fighters for peace and the supporters of the overall disarmament.
Speaking on the EU contribution towards peace, Mairead Maguire said there is no doubt that the military policy of Brussels contradicts the cause of peace. The lawsuit is not aimed against the EU, and its goal is to protect Nobel’s ideas on establishing peace around the world through cooperation between countries, trust and total disarmament, the activist said.
