Italy won't take part in a military operation in Syria

UNITED NATIONS, September 28. /TASS/. A meeting between the Russian and US presidents, Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama, is of vital importance for the Syrian settlement, Italy’s Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said on Monday.

"If the entire world community shared a common position on Syria, the problem would have been solved. But it is a difficult question. So, a Putin-Obama meeting is very important," said Renzi, who is taking part in the 70th jubilee session of the United Nations General Assembly.

He said his country would not take part in a military operation in Syria. "Italy will make its contribution but without direct involvement in the context of the current situation in Syria if only because there are no legal grounds for action beyond political assessments," he added.
