Ukrainian Justice Ministry registers nationalistic party UNA-UNSO

This will enable the party to take part in local elections this October

KIEV, August 26. /TASS/. Ukrainian Justice Ministry has registered the far-right political party Ukrainian National Assembly/Ukrainian People's Self-Defense (UNA-UNSO), the party's press service said. The registration formalities were over on August 20.

This will enable UNA-UNSO to take part in local elections this October. The party that is quite outspoken about its far-right ideology says its main objectives at the forthcoming election is to facilitate development of a sovereign, democratic, socially-oriented state ruled by law, to participate in the setting-up of state and local self-government agencies, to get seats on them through elections or other political procedures, to modernize the state proceeding from the principles of justice and transparency, to assist the formulation and expression of the citizens' political will, and to ensure the rights of man.

UNA-UNSO, which is directly related to the ultra-right Ukrainian nationalistic movements of the World War II era, although it re-emerged in its current form in the early 1990's.

In March 2014, the Ukrainian National Assembly merged with the Right Sector extremist political organization, the activity of which is forbidden in Russia.

Ukrainian People's Self-Defense continues functioning as a public association.
