No grounds to say that UN Security Council is paralyzed — Russia FM
There are more and more attempts to act unilaterally on the international arena, Lavrov said
VLADIMIR, August 24. /TASS/. Statements that UN Security Council is paralyzed are far from reality, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told the youth forum "Territory of meanings on the Klyazma" on Monday.
"There are more and more attempts to act unilaterally on the international arena, and they are justified by the fact that the UN Security Council is allegedly paralyzed. This is not true," Lavrov said. "UN Security Council adopted around resolution in last years which are in force," he added.
Lavrov reminded that Russia and China were forced to use their veto right when UN Security Council "was offered to vote for something that directly contradicts the interests of settlement of the Syrian crisis, for instance." "It was offered to take the side of the armed opposition which announced the aim of ousting the legitimate president with support from external sponsors," the foreign minister said.
The minister also provided another example when Russia had to use its veto right "in response to attempts to politicize such serious matters as necessity of comprehensive investigation of the tragedy of the Malaysian Boeing."
"This disagreement between assertive promotion of their Western view of democracy when it deals with the state structure of other countries and simultaneous refusal to discuss practical democratization of international relations are very characteristic for the modern epoch," Lavrov said.
