Deputy Representative of Vnesheconombank in New York Yevgeny Buryakov detained by the FBI on espionage charges on January 26 faces 15 years in prison
NEW YORK, July 30. /TASS/. The United States District Court of New York State has denied on Wednesday a motion of the lawyers of Russian citizen Yevgeny Buryakov on withdrawing the charges against him. The hearings in Buryakov’s case are scheduled for December 7.
Deputy Representative of Vnesheconombank in New York Yevgeny Buryakov was detained by the FBI on espionage charges on January 26. He faces 15 years in prison. On June 11, Buryakov’s lawyers filed a motion on withdrawing the charges against him. The documents handed over to court said that criminal charges against the Russian national had to be dropped due to lack of evidence.
Russian Foreign Ministry’s Commissioner for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law Konstantin Dolgov earlier said that the legal proceedings against Buryakov were unfounded. "There are still accusations not supported by evidence, but we will, of course, continue to make efforts aimed at protecting his legitimate rights and interests, including procedural rights," Dolgov said. "We will continue to seek his early release by political, diplomatic and legal means. We support the efforts of his lawyers."
