The report says the real number of those killed and wounded "could be significantly higher"

GENEVA, June 1. /TASS/. The armed conflict in eastern Ukraine has left 6,417 people dead and 15,962 wounded, the United Nations said in its latest report on Monday covering the period between mid-April last year and May 30, 2015.

The report by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights notes that these are conservative estimates, the real number of those killed and wounded "could be significantly higher."

The UN monitoring mission has gathered evidence of serious human rights violations: the shelling of settlements, executions, illegal detentions. It notes that the fighting has a devastating effect on the lives of 5 million people living the conflict zone and more than 1,2 million of internally displaced persons. The suspension of pensions and social benefits in the areas controlled by militias by the authorities in Kiev has seriously affected at least 400,000 pensioners. The report also points to serious restrictions of freedom of speech in Ukraine and the growing number of casualties among journalists.

The report urges all parties to the conflict to seek ways to an agreement through dialogue.
