Ukrainian parliament radicals propose to cancel Black Sea Fleet stay agreement with Russia
According to the agreement, the Russian Black Sea Fleet base was located in Sevastopol, which after the referendum on the reunification of Crimea with Russia joined the Russian Federation
KIEV, May 25. /TASS/. The Radical Party faction in the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada (parliament) has proposed to cancel Ukrainian-Russian agreements on the status and conditions of the Russian Black Sea Fleet stationing in Ukrainian territory. The corresponding draft law was registered in the parliament on Monday, the Rada press service reported.
"The bill proposes to denounce the bilateral agreements on the status and conditions of the Russian Black Sea Fleet stationing, on the parameters of the Black Sea Fleet’s division and mutual payments associated with the fleet division and its stationing in the territory of Ukraine," the press service said.
The agreement on the status and conditions of the Russian Black Sea Fleet stationing in Ukraine was signed on May 28, 1997 and came into force on July 12, 1999. Three agreements were signed for a term of 20 years - until 2017 with a possible extension, on the condition that neither party notifies the other in writing no later than one year before its expiration.
Next agreements were signed in Kharkiv on April 21, 2010. They set an annual $100 million rent for Russia starting from May 28, 2017 for the Black Sea Fleet stationing in Ukraine, also from funds obtained through natural gas price discount for Ukraine. Then Ukraine got the ‘Kharkiv’ gas price discount of $100 per 1,000 cubic metres.
According to the agreement, the Russian Black Sea Fleet base was located in Sevastopol, which after the referendum on the reunification of Crimea with Russia joined the Russian Federation.
Last week, the Verkhovna Rada denounced a series of agreements with the Russian Federation in the field of security and defense.
