Serbia is expected to join the EU in 2020

BELGRADE, May 20. /TASS/. Serbia, which has been seeking to become part of the European Union, is tired of waiting for the eventual membership, the country’s Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic has told Euronews.

Vucic complained of "patience fatigue" with the EU: "We invested not only a lot of our time, our full energy, our political strength in today’s processes, we also started the toughest and harshest possible economic reforms in Serbia. We achieved a lot in the dialogue with Kosovo Albanians, then you see that you are not even respected."

Speaking on normalizing ties with Kosovo, he said: "It was a very hard, very difficult issue for us, but we carried on with the dialogue with Kosovo Albanians."

"My job is to take care of the interests of this country and to do something for the sake of our people, and it doesn’t matter whether it fits to everybody’s way of thinking," he stressed.

Vucic, who attended the Friends of Serbia meeting in Brussels on Monday that involved the representatives of the 28 EU member-states, said that he hoped that the negotiation process on the country’s accession to the bloc would be launched long before the end of the year.

Serbia has had the candidate country status since March 2012. The country officially applied for the EU membership in late December 2009. Serbia is expected to join the EU in 2020.
