Hillary Clinton to run for US president in 2016 election
This is the second attempt for Clinton, 67, to run for US president
NEW YORK, April 12. /TASS/. Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will run for president in 2016 election, Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta said on Sunday.
Clinton’s presidential campaign will officially start next month, Podesta said.
This is the second attempt for Clinton, 67, to run for US president. In 2008, she lost to incumbent President Barack Obama, but now she is considered to have one of the highest chances to win the 2016 election.
Clinton will soon head for Iowa, which holds the first presidential nominating contest in the nation.
Vice President Joseph Biden is considered Clinton’s likeliest contender in the Democratic Party. However, polls show that Biden is much less popular. He has not yet announced his presidential bid. On Sunday, US President Barack Obama said Clinton would make "an excellent president."
Earlier on Sunday, US Secretary of State John Kerry wished success to his predecessor Hillary Clinton. "I wish her well in this race," Kerry told ABC, adding that Clinton had done a "terrific job" as secretary of state. Clinton rebuilt alliances "that had been shredded over the course of the prior years" and helped negotiate a ceasefire in Gaza and made the initial contacts with Iran, Kerry noted.
Next US presidential elections will take place in 2016. US President Barack Obama cannot run for presidency again, as he is serving his second term.
Among the Republicans, the highest chances to be nominated for presidency are with Florida Governor Jeb Bush, brother of former president George W. Bush; New Jersey Governor Chris Christie; Senator Marco Rubio; Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker; former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee; Congressman Paul Ryan and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson.
Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) have already announced their bids for presidency.
