Ukrainian President, UN Development Program chief discuss peacekeeping mission for Donbas
Petro Poroshenko and Helen Clark also touched upon further reforms and the need for a constitutional dialogue in Ukraine
KIEV, March 23. /TASS/. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has had a meeting with the Administrator of the UN Development Program, Helen Clark, in the course of which they discussed the situation in the war-torn eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions (Donbas) and a possibility of deploying UN peacekeepers there, the presidential press service said.
"The President pointed out the importance of efforts to deploy peacekeepers under the UN auspices for deescalating the situation in Donbas and he expressed the hope the UN Security Council and the General Assembly would endorse an appropriate mandate," the report said.
Clark and Poroshenko also discussed further reforms and the need for a constitutional dialogue in Ukraine. As he spoke about the constitutional reform that aims to introduce decentralization in the country, he said the Kiev authorities hoped for assistance from the UN development program to the constitutional changes under consideration.
The sides agreed that the development program would have a hand in the process of constitutional changes and would facilitate constitutional dialogue.
The sides discussed the new aspects and tasks of an international conference of donors for Ukraine due to be held in April. They agreed to step up the efforts towards preparing and holding it.
Poroshenko thanked Clark for revising the UN plan for humanitarian response to the situation in Donbas that had been expanded to $316 million from $189 million to embrace up to 3.2 million potential recipients versus the 900,000 previous ones.
