300 US servicemen sent to Western Ukraine to train Ukrainian soldiers — Russia's UN envoy
Vitaly Churkin warned about dangerous consequences of such steps, reminding of situation around South Ossetia during Saakashvili presidency, when as many as 127 US military advisers worked in Georgia
UNITED NATIONS, March 6 /TASS/. Russia on Friday drew attention of the United Nations Security Council to reports about commissioning 300 US servicemen to Ukraine’s Western Lviv region to train Ukrainian soldiers and to Washington’s plans to allocate $1 billion for such purposes.
"The US Congress is working on a bill on allocating $1 billion to equip and train Ukrainian troops. According to available information, three hundred US servicemen are to be commissioned to the Lviv region these days to train Ukrainian soldiers to operate overseas weaponry," Russia’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said.
He warned about dangerous consequences of such steps. "The whole world knows: there where the American military appear, there comes havoc," he said. "I would like to remind you, for example, that during the (Mikheil) Saakashvili regime’s aggression against South Ossetia, as many as 127 US military advisers worked in Georgia. The result — conflict, blood, fear. Only irresponsible politicians do not see what would be an outcome of such scenario."
The Russian diplomat noted encouraging progress at the talks in the Normandy and Minsk formats. At the same time, he said he was worried over Kiev’s behavior. "On the backdrop of positive changes, of serious worry are Kiev’s ongoing sabre rattling — President (Petro) Poroshenko’s statements on reinforcement of the army, handing over to the National Guard and the army new batches of tanks, trips by Kiev officials in search of weapons," Churkin said.
