BUENOS AIRES, February 26. /TASS/. Uruguayan President Jose Mujica has called Guantanamo prison a "human disgrace" in an interview with Reuters published on Wednesday.

In December 2014, six people were sent to Uruguay after 10 years in Guantanamo without charges or trial. Former Guantanamo inmates, including four Syrians, one Palestinian and one Tunisian, are "destroyed" and "lack the strength to learn Spanish and integrate," Mujico said. "They lack the inner strength, the will to move one with their lives. They have been turned halfway into vegetables," he added.

The men find it hard to find work and adapt to their lives in exile, the president noted. "They need to recuperate. But I don’t know if they will," Mujico said.

Mujico’s presidential term expires on March 1, when he will be succeeded by Tabare Vazquez from the leftist Frente Amplio coalition.
