Text of UN resolution on Ukraine agreed, vote set for Tuesday — Russian deputy FM
The resolution approves the package of measures to implement the new peace deal, agreed at Minsk talks and welcomes the joint declaration, adopted by the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany
MOSCOW, February 17. /TASS/. Agreement has been reached on a draft United Nations Security Council resolution on Ukraine and a vote is due to take place in New York later on Tuesday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov told TASS.
"The text of the Ukraine resolution, supporting the package of measures for the implementation of the Minsk agreements, has been agreed," the diplomat said, adding that the 15-member Security Council was expected to vote later in the day.
When asked about the proposed amendments, Gatilov said: "This was a natural process of negotiating the text, and our partners — French, English and Malaysian representatives — introduced amendments."
"In the long run, we have managed to agree on a text that suits all delegations," he said, noting that "the most important thing" was that the resolution approved the package of measures to implement the new peace deal, agreed at talks in the Belarusian capital Minsk, and welcomed the joint declaration, adopted by the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany, which supported these measures.
"We consider it important that the Security Council has thrown its weight behind efforts to promote a peaceful settlement in Ukraine’s south-east," Gatilov added.
Russia introduced its draft resolution aimed at implementing the Minsk agreements last Friday, February 13. The vote was slated for Sunday, but Western partners decided to postpone discussion to make some changes to the document.
A spokesman for Russia's UN mission told TASS the Security Council would vote on the draft resolution on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. New York time (11:00 p.m. Moscow time).
