French politician warns about looming threat of war in eastern Europe
Francois Fillon says the United States may trigger an expansion of the conflict that emerged far from its territory through its activity, notably through offering weapons supplies
PARIS, February 6. /TASS/. In an interview with Le Figaro French daily on Friday, former French Prime Minister Francois Fillon expressed concern about the possibility of a war in the east of Europe, saying a peace initiative of the French and German leaders came as good news amid a worsening situation in eastern Ukraine.
"A war in the east of Europe must be avoided. Especially in conditions when the United States may trigger an expansion of the conflict that emerged far from its territory through its activity, notably through offering weapons supplies," Francois Fillon said.
"A statement by French President Francois Hollande that he was heading for Moscow together with German Chancellor Angela Merkel was the only really good news in his yesterday’s two-hour-long conference," he said.
He said that from the very start of the Ukrainian crisis, he has "repeatedly urged Francois Hollande and Angela Merkel to take the initiative and bring up for discussion an efficient plan for a peaceful settlement that would regard both the interests of Ukraine and Russia.
